Media product evaluation presentation

Here is the presentation I have created to justify my reasons for using specific technologies for each question of my evaluation:
Q1:
The technology I have decided to use for question one is a slideshare, I believe this specific software is appropriate as question one has more data that needs to be covered and I can justify my reasons efficiently using this technology. Alongside text pictures will be added as well as annotated to ensure I answer the questions completely.

Q2:
The technology I have decided to use for question two is stupeflix, , by using this technology I can create a short video clip which explain why my media product represents a particular social group. I think that this is a suitable software as it is not just interactive but a unique way of presenting my answer.

Q3:
The technology I have decided to use for question three is spiderscribe, I believe that by using spiderscribe I can create a well answer for Q3. I will also be adding images alongside text. It is a easier software to navigate as well as explore from.

Q4:
The technology I have decided to use for question four is a slideshare the reason being is that although it is quite a short answer images could be added and the software chosen makes it look far more professional than an ordinary powerpoint presentation.

Q5:

The technology I have decided to use for question five is slideshare. For this to happen I first have to create a powerpoint and within this I will use images as another way of presenting my answer.

Q6:
Fir this question I will be using a prezi, this is an interactive way of presenting my answe I will be using the facilities they accomodate on this sofware for example the layout and background design.

Q7:
The technology I have decided to use for question six is spiderscibe because once again there is rather a lot of information that needs to be covered for this question and spiderscribe most suitable for this.

NME examples for my music magazine

After browsing on the internet, researching on ideas for the front of my music magazine I decided to analyse NME in depth as it based on the genre of rock which links to my chosen genre which is indie and indie caters for rock as well. I especially liked how the bold red masthead standed out also, because it is only three letters it makes it more likely to be memorable for the buyers
Therefore taking this in to consideration I wanted to also have a short masthead so I came up with IND.

Magazine distribution

Task 5: Magazine newsstand task/ distribution of magazines (planning)

For the magazine distribution task I went to a newsagent where there was a range of different magazines and for the purpose of this tast I took a photograph of the music magazines.

The layout of magazines on stands are all layed out in a specific way, which is having all of their mastheads on show to attract the buyers and immediately inform them where each magazine belongs (company.)  Some examples of the magazines we can identidy are 'Clash' 'Rock' 'Clash' and 'Kerrang.' You cannot see their prices as you would have to pick it up and check because they are not exactly on show for the customers. This may be because the sellers want people to pick it up and have a glance through it, instead of being put off because of the price.

Audience feedback and evaluation-preliminary task/college magazine.

Evaluation of the college magazine

I am satisfied with the quality of my front cover as I believe it is appealing for the following reason, the masthead stands out and looks good with the image especially because it is the same colour as the clothing the student  in the photograph is wearing, I done this by using the eyedropper tool on photoshop. Also the puff I chose to add to the magazine makes it look more professional and advanced as it is a key feature that would be placed on most magazines.

I like the way the masthead 'LSC' is behind the the image I done this by using the eraser tool on photoshop by carefully rubbing out part of the 'C' so it gives the impression that the student is infront of the masthead. In addition to this 'LSC' is quite simply an abbreviation for 'Leyton sixth form college' this is most commonly used by the students at LSC so I decided to name the magazine that as it could make the potential buyers feel more comfortable with the magazine.Furthermore I am pleased with the image I have used as it is a midshot of a student from LSC, representing the college. He looks very engaging and welcoming which would therefore make majority of the students purchase this. Lastly as he is wearing the LSC ID it once again enhances what the magazine is about and what the readers could expect.

What do I need to improve on? I think that I would need to improve the colours I have picked for the text as it may not be easy to read from. Also I could change the layout of of the barcode and LSC logo as it does look out of place therefore if I had experienced more with the software this could of easily be solved. A very important factor that I have missed to add is the price of the magazine although it has a barcode it is essential for it to have to cost on the front cover this way people know how much it is worth.

For the contents page, I have used a lot of informative language so that it is easier for the readers to navigate through the magazine and acknowledge what the magazine has to offer for them. I also have used 3 different images this is to suit people with different interests and give an insight of the college to people who may of been new for example AS students. By doing this I have tried to appeal to different types of audience and their needs. Lastly I have added an information on subscription and this may also draw some readers attention and encourage them to sign up for more issues of the magazine. I designed the contents page on InDesign as we believed that it was the most suitable software for creating a contents page because of the various features it has to offer for example the shapes to insert pictures in and the columns which are especially designed to keep the layout of a magazine sharp.

What do I need to improve on? I need to improve on the layout, and colour scheme because although it is easy to follow it is not as eye catching as I believed it would be, it looks rather plain and has no character to it. However this can easily be solved for instance next time I may decide to use a different coloured background rather than white, which might make it even more interesting to look at.

After reading the audiences feedback the main points I need to explore are:
  • The choice of colour I have decided to use, as some think that the 'red' I have used on my front cover could be changed and adapted to make the magazine look more alluring.
  • The layout of the contents page and with this I could think again about how I decide where the text goes, for example I could have used to colums instead of one.

College magazine analysis.

  • This image type is a  mid shot, which shows the person from the waist upwards.
  • There is a specific colour scheme which includes black, green and white.
  • The masthead is in a bold font with a bright green colour which adds a burst of colour in the black background.
  • The masthead also instantly gives us an insight of what the magazine might cover, as it is called "college" therefore we know that that the purpose of this magazine is to inform and entertain people who are in education.
  • In the image the person is holding books to do with "law and society" which once again outlines that it is aimed at students.
  • Also the persons body language could be perceived as a friendly person as he does not seem violent or angry therefore he is approachable.
  • There is also a bar code on the left hand side which informs the buyer the cost of this magazine.
  • The coverline's are in a bold font which stands out from the other text.
  • The issue date can also be found in the top right hand side of the magazine.

Contents page analysis.
  • This contents page seems to be more simplistic yet still engages the reader.
  • This picture tries to preset the college as a peaceful environment.
  • The page numbers are in order so it makes it easier for the reader to follow.
  • The colour scheme is bright which engages the reader, however the colour scheme does not compliment each other as they make it harder for the reader to follow.
  • This college magazine also follows a very typical college magazine layout.

Task 2- Case studies (class)

Conventions : "the rules"
In magazines :  masthead
                       coverlines
                       bar codes
                       pricing
                       skylines
                       house style.
Generic:  things typical to (music) genre.
               -arstist appropiate to a genre
                -numerical order
                -content is arranged in categories
                -images reflect genre
-in depth piece of journalism on a topic also know as a feature page.

The magazine I analysed was called "Q." I believe it is aimed at the adult market as it had a lot of formal text  which was believed to be suit the audience of the magazine. The image at the front of the magazine was of an artist who I percieve as a angry and fierce person this could also be linked to the genre of music as its purpose is to inform rock fans on the upcoming events, artists and other information linked with rock.

Case study:NME & Kerrang.

Case study

For this part of my coursework I had to analyse the front cover, contents page and double page spread for two magazines of my own choice. The magazines I decided to use were NME and Kerrang the reason for this was because I believe they are well known magazines by a majority of people and I find myself interested in the genres they cover.

NME magazine:

NME: front cover.
Starting of with NME magazines front cover I can identify that this magazine follows a basic colour scheme which includes black, white and red however this is still appealing. The colours work well together and makes it easy to read the text. However there is not much text in the front cover which may make the buyer dissastisfied as they could possibly want more of an insight of the magazine and what they can expect from it as right now it is quite limited. None the less the image is of three people, with a quirky, fun facial expression. This can be perceived as welcoming for the buyer and they also represent a girl band which once again outlines what they magazine may consist of. However some people maybe put off my this image as it extremely gender based as it is made up of three females which may isolate male buyers and restrict the audience of the magazine. Although having to say this the masthead is in a big bold font which stands out in the plain background this burst of colour gives the magazine a pleasent touch. Another feature that is on the magazine is its cost and issue number these are rather significant because the buyers in that case are aware of how much it costs.

HME: Contents page.

Moving on to the contents page of HME magazine, I can immediately see that it is packed with information which is useful for the reader to navigate between the magazine and because I pointed out earlier that in the front cover there was not much information the contents page is fufilling it job. The colour scheme here is consistant compared the front cover, it continues to follow the scheme of black red and yellow which enlightens the reader that it is NME magazine. It also has small images are also added to suit different readers interests incase people rather look through than read every single piece of information given. The images are also linked to what the magazine has included inside for example there is a image of Robin Thicke and the article is based on one of his songs called "blurred lines."The articles are also numerically ordered which once again makes it easier for the reader to follow and navigate without having to waste time by going through every page. Some people may argue with the fact that there is rather a lot going in the contents page and it may be overwhelming for them and therefore they should of kept it more basic in contrast to this idea I think that NME have done a good job by having a lot of different sorts of information because I thought that the front cover was simple and therefore by the contents page having more to it, it gives more to the audience ans suits a larger target market. Finally there is also a subscription information in the bottom right hand side of the page, the purpose of this is to lead people in to spending money on NME and try to cover the necessities of it readers.

Kerrang:
NME: double page spread.
Finally moving on the last piece of of NME magazine I will explore the double page spread, the colour scheme of this double page spread is not exacly the same as it now uses pink and blue although it has the same element of a white background. The reason for this could be to make it easier for the reader to follow as the colours work well with each other.Another reasin for this could be that this article is based on a girl group and they might of believed that these colours will suit girls more. However by doing this they have restricted the audience because some male audienced may be put off by this choice of colour. This page's purpose is to eneteratin as well as inform we can see this by the amount of text it includes. However there is informal lexis used through out the article which is highly explicit therefore the target audience may be aimed for adults as it would be inappropiate for a very young audience. There is also an image to do with the article which is based on a group of girls, the image is taken from the waist up, also known as a midshot. It also includes a small timeline of the history of "Alana, Estelle and Danielle" on the bottom of the page which could be useful if the reader has no knowledge on this group. From these features they have used we can identify that NME magazine tries to give rather a lot of information to inform their readers and by doing this they make their readers make the most of their magazine.

Kerrang magazine:

Kerrang: front cover.
Now moving on to Kerrang magazine, the front cover of this magazine is full of different information about rock music which suggests that it is a magazine based on that specific genre. The colour scheme which consists of bright orange and yellow tones along side black stand out and adds character to the magazine. The mast head is also quite bold, it is in a black bold font which stands out in the orange background. There are also different types of images from a female as the main and also "6 selfie posters" on the left handside. This tells us that Kerrang are trying to advertise whats inside the magazine this could be so that buyers are more like to purchase this.

Kerrang: contents page.
Moving on to the contents page of Kerrang magazines contents page, comparing it to the front cover the contents page has less going on in the background therefore it makes it easier to the reader to follow the colours are more subtle. The colour scheme is also not consistent through out as it has changes significantly it now includes: white, pink and black. But saying this it might appeal to someone with a older age as they may prefer a simpler scheme. On the right hand side there is also a message from the editor of kerrang magazine stating how his job is to inform rock readers about the upcoming artists/bands and how kerrang magazine is ideal for this matter. This could lead to people to buy more and more Kerrang magazines if they are interested in information about tock music. The contents page is also numerically order which once again makes it easier for the reader. There are also images to do with whats in the magazine to suit people with different interests.

Kerrang: double page spread.
  • This article is full of infomation about the new album of a rock band. The article does include a short introduction on what they believe to cover in this story.
  • The language is seen to be quite formal which may be targeted at the older audience however they do use taboo lexis which once again might not be too suitable for someone with a younger age.
  • The colour scheme is the same with the front cover which shows it is actually consistent to an extent.
  • The image in this article is strong in the way that it compliments the main genre of Kerrang magazine which is a rock genre based. The body language of this person seems to flow with the idea of music as she is singing(holding a microphone.)
  • The clothing she is wearing is very sport based with trainders and a sweater which links back to the the genre as it is based on being comfortable and having fun.
